Problems are not solved by prescriptions; they are solved through understanding.
We often try to solve problems by applying prescriptions. We think we need advice from someone who knows. We believe we need to study and acquire new knowledge. We assume we need better solutions. All of these are treated like prescriptions for the problem—like a medicine we can take that will magically fix everything. Essentially, we are looking for a shortcut.
Our tendency to solve problems this way is actually an avoidance of the real issue. We want to skip the hard part and look for easier fixes, but they never really work. We may be fooled into thinking the problem is solved, but on the most fundamental level, it's not.
When trying to address the problem of not being in shape, we watch videos, talk to coaches, and imagine how our lives would look if we were fit. We are seeking prescriptions. Yet after a few days or weeks, we quit the habit of working out—again. This is avoidance of the real problem: a lack of self-discipline.
The only way to truly solve a problem is by understanding it. The problem is already staring you right in the face, and you have access to everything you need to dive into it, understand it, and unpack it. Through this deep understanding at the most fundamental level, you will solve it.
Surface-level understanding of a problem is not enough. Depth is required—a fundamental understanding. This is hard, requiring you to relentlessly pursue better explanations of the problem. But it is the only way.
To solve a problem, understand it and confront it. Don't distract yourself with solutions, advice, or other forms of avoidance. It's right in front of you, and only you can dive into it, understand it deeply, and thus solve it.
