Simplicity & Clarity

Feb 24, 2025

The transition from thought to action in the real world is where magic happens. Yet it remains the part least understood by most people—the very point where many ideas die.

There are countless lessons and approaches to help during this transition. The ones that resonate with me most—and have proven most useful for both me and those I work with—are simplicity and clarity.

Let's start with clarity. When you're in a state of mental chaos (as many artists often are), taking dedicated action becomes nearly impossible. With hundreds of possible directions, a lack of clear focus means you won't achieve the results you desire. To get what you want, you must be clear about your direction and stick to it. Without that clarity, you risk constantly course-adjusting or not knowing where to begin, leaving you stuck.

Results begin with clarity. If you cannot clearly express the vision you're pursuing and the actions needed to reach it, success remains out of reach. Contemplating your vision, writing about it, or sketching out projects helps you gain the clarity necessary to succeed. It’s the essential first step.

Once you have clarity, the next step is simplicity. Overcomplicating your goals makes taking action exponentially harder. Complexity, in this sense, is the enemy of execution. Instead of setting the bar too high—like committing to 90 minutes of exercise every day when life inevitably interferes—start simple. Try just 5 minutes a day. In a world fueled by compound interest, long-term consistency matters far more than short bursts of intensity. The more complexity you add, the harder it becomes to stick with your plan.

Simplicity not only makes it easier for you to show up and do the work you are meant to, but it also makes it easier for others to join your journey. If you need 30 minutes to explain your work, you’re doing something wrong—it should be clear in 30 seconds. If it's not, then your vision isn't clear or simple enough.

By cultivating clarity and simplicity in the projects you want to bring into the world, you're already ahead of over 95% of people. Your mind may try to play tricks on you, whispering, "If it were this simple, everyone would do it." The truth is, it is that simple. Yet our thinking mind and fear-based thoughts get in the way, and negative self-beliefs can limit us in profound ways.

In your life, start with clarity and simplicity. They will take you far—but remember, this approach demands a continuous commitment to clarifying and simplifying, again and again.
