A good value to live by is to provide use value in excess of cash value.
This phrase comes from Wallace D. Wattles. It means that whenever you exchange something—whether a service, product, or possession—for money (the proxy we use to estimate value), you should attempt to give more than you receive in cash. Some people might simply call this generosity.
I personally believe that the good you do and the use value you provide will eventually return to you in excess. Instead of focusing on what you can take, focus on what you can give. One may call this karma, generosity, or a giving mindset. All of these capture the idea that giving first and patiently waiting without expectations will yield returns that manifest in unpredictable ways.
I have experienced this many times in my life. Beyond fostering a more peaceful state of being and a deeper connection with the world, it opens up opportunities you cannot fathom today.
Lead with generosity, and always trade use value in excess of cash value. Something beyond the human mind will take notice and return the act manyfold.
